Wandering Vine Handwoven Table Runner
I was very happy when a friend from college contacted me about weaving a table runner for her boyfriend for Valentine's Day. When we started discussing style, I was even happier that she loves overshot as much as I do! I really loved the Wandering Vine - also known as Snail Trail and Cat Paw - pattern when I first started weaving and was excited to weave it again now that I have an additional two years of weaving experience. It was even more lovely this time. This pattern will forever be one of my favorites.
The sett is 24 epi. The warp and tabby are 10/2 perle cotton in natural and the blue weft is 3/2 perle cotton in denim. I used the draft in the old green Davison book on page 166.
As I said in a previous post, if you weave this pattern, it is worth noting that the photo in the older green version of the Davison book does not match up to the pattern as written - specifically, the photo has 6 lines of snail trail, but the pattern only includes 5 as you can see in this table runner. The right side works out beautifully as written, but I added a balance of additional repeats of the first three sets of 16 on the left side. It is threaded with two full repeats of the whole threading plus an additional threading of only the three sets of 16. I had a total of 296 ends plus two ends for a floating selvedge, which ended up at about 12.33 inches wide. When weaving, I started and ended with 12 rows of plain weave at the beginning and end of the project. The pattern as written starts with the cats paw, but I modified it to start with the snail trail so it would balance at the top and bottom. To do this, start weaving the pattern at the sets of 3s. Happy weaving!
